Rodent Control Methods

There are several methods that can be effective for controlling rat populations, including:

  1. Trapping: Using traps is a common and effective method for catching and removing rats. There are various types of traps available, including snap traps, glue traps, and live traps. In our opinion snap traps are the most effective and also the most humane method.
  2. Poison: Poison baits can be effective for controlling rat populations, although care must be taken to use them safely and to follow all relevant regulations. Poisons are widely used but these can be eaten by cats, dogs, and hawks making them very sick or cause possible death.
  3. Habitat modification: Removing sources of food, water, and shelter can help to reduce rat populations by making the environment less attractive to them. This is always a very good idea and should be done in conjunction with a good trapping program.
  4. Exclusion: Sealing up holes and other entry points can help to prevent rats from entering buildings and other structures.
  5. Ultrasonic devices: Some people claim that ultrasonic devices, which emit high-frequency sounds that are supposed to be uncomfortable for rats, can be effective for deterring rats. However, the effectiveness of these devices is often disputed and we don't believe they work very well.

It is often most effective to use a combination of these methods in an integrated pest management approach. It is also important to regularly monitor for the presence of rats and to take timely action to control their populations.
